L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science International Awards 2026 : Call for applications

The FNRS has been a partner of the L'Oréal-UNESCO “For Women in Science” programme for 18 years. Within this framework, the call for applications for the 2026 International Awards, which recognise and support eminent women scientists around the world, has just been opened. The FNRS is pleased to inform you.

Main features 

  • The 2026 edition of the Awards will designate five outstanding scientific researchers in the fields of Life and Environmental Sciences, working in the following regions:
    • Africa and the Arab States
    • Asia and the Pacific
    • Europe
    • Latin America and the Caribbean
    • North America 
  • One candidate will be selected for each of the five regions, the determining factor being the place of work for at least 10 years, not the nationality of the candidate.
  • Each Award amounts to 100.000 € (for personal use).

Eligible applicants 

  • The candidate must:
    • Be recognized for her scientific excellence by the international scientific community.
    • Be actively involved in scientific research.
    • Work in any field within the Life and Environmental Sciences mentioned in appendix 1 of the regulations.
  • There is no age limit for the candidates.
  • Self-nominations and teams’ nominations are not eligible.

Selection criteria

  • The candidate’s outstanding contribution to the general advancement of science.
  • The impact of the candidate's research on the current state of the relevant scientific field (number, quality and impact of publications, conference presentations, patents).
  • The recognition of the candidate by peers within her discipline through publications.
  • The recognition of the candidate’s commitments to education, teaching activities, mentoring and/or to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals more broadly.

  • Deadline of the call: July 4th, 2025
  • Panel meeting: December 2025
  • Awards Ceremony: June 2026

How to apply ?

To be considered eligible for an Award, it is necessary to be nominatedin writing by an eminent scientist.

Qualified nominators may be:

  • Heads of University or Scientific Institutions.
  • Members of Academies of Science.
  • Holders of Research Chairs.
  • Full professors.
  • Past For Women in Science Award Laureates.
  • or at a minimum holders of a PhD in Science.

Nominations can only be submitted electronically through the online-dedicated platform and must be written in English.

Collaboration with the FNRS

The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Programme also allows the FNRS to run an additional funding instrument aiming at grantingAdditional Research Credits Grants for female postdoctoral researchers in the field of Exact and Natural Sciences every two years. 

These Additional Research Credits (ARC) Grants amount to 20.000€ and come on top of the regular Research Credits attached to the FNRS Postdoctoral Researcher Grants. These ARC Grants follow the same regulation than the regular Research Credits attached to these FNRS mandates and can be used to cover eligible running costs during their timeframe.

Three ARC Grants will be available in 2026.

SCK CEN Chair Roger Van Geen : Call for applications

This Chair, granted on the initiative of the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre, is awarded to an eminent researcher in the domaine of nuclear sciences and their applications.

Main features  

  • The research career to be awarded should include substantial and original contribution to the field of nuclear energy and/or nuclear radiation. Both technically oriented research and socio-economic research can be considered.
  • The selection criteria are:
    • Scientific quality of the research during the career in fundamental or applied aspects of nuclear sciences.
    • A proven track record of education in this field.
    • Potential for setting up scientific collaboration with SCK CEN. 
  • Amount: 12.500 € (for personnal use).

Eligible topics

  • Innovative nuclear systems
  • Sustainable nuclear waste management and decommissioning
  • Nuclear medicine
  • Safety of nuclear installations and nuclear material sciences
  • Radiation protection
  • Any other area in nuclear sciences and applications, including social sciences

Eligible applicants

  • Candidates must be of postdoctoral level at least.
  • Candidates must be affiliated to a recognized research institute or university from the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland.
  • Previous laureates of the SCK CEN Chair are not eligible.
  • Laureates of the previous SCK CEN Award, organised until 2015, are eligible.

Laureate duties

  • Following a positive research security appraisal by SCK CEN, the recipient of the Chair is expected to give an inauguration lecture and a series of lectures during a scientific stay at the SCK CEN Research Centre in Belgium.
  • The series of lectures will be organised in interaction with the SCK CEN Academy.
  • All related costs will be reimbursed.

Lambertine Lacroix Award 2026 - oncology : call for applications

On the initiative of the Lambertine Lacroix Foundation, the Fund for Scientific Research-FNRS will grant, in 2025, an Award in the field of oncology to a researcher affiliated to a university of the Federation Wallonia-Brussels.

 

Main features

  • Reward a particularly deserving researcher for a fundamental research work in oncology, with translational implications.  
  • Amount: 30.000 € for personnal use.

Eligible applicants

  • Applicants must be affiliated, at the deadline of the call, to a University of the Federation Wallonia-Brussels, an eligible University Hospital or an eligible Research Institute (cf. annex to the regulations). 
  • Applicants must hold a university degree and cannot have reached the age of 51 at the deadline of the call. This age limit can be extended by one year for each maternity leave since the first year of the PhD.
  • Joint applications are not allowed. 
  • Researchers who have already received a Lambertine Lacroix Award or a personal Award of equal or superior amount are not eligible.

Opening of the first Audacious Medical Grant (AMG) call - pediatrics!

The FNRS is launching a brand new call: an Audacious Medical Grant call in the field of paediatric diseases. This funding is made possible by private sponsorship.

Description of the instrument

  • AMG-Pediatrics funding is intended for a single, eligible promoter from the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles to carry out a medical or biomedical research project that is original and daring in nature, but which does not find support in traditional funding channels due to a lack of preliminary data, the absence of previous work or an unusual methodology (inter-university projects will not be supported under this call).
  • Duration of funding: 24 months maximum.
  • Amount of funding: maximum 120,000 euros.
  • Eligible costs: personnel, operating costs, equipment (flexibility will be allowed between these different categories of costs). 

Scientific scope

  • The scientific scope will take into consideration all pathologies affecting paediatric or foetal patients/subjects, including infectious diseases and vaccinology, immune deficiencies, cardiovascular, respiratory and metabolic diseases, congenital, developmental, neurological and psychiatric disorders, cancers, etc.
  • All approaches will be eligible (biomedical research, clinical research, translational research, epidemiological research, public health, modelling, etc.).
  • The projects presented should lead to:
    • a better understanding of a paediatric disease,
    • and/or the development of new therapeutic approaches/tools/techniques,
    • and/or improved prevention or detection of paediatric diseases.

The FNRS is launching a new Audacious Medical Grant call for proposals in the field of neuroscience

Description of the instrument

  • AMG-Neuro funding is intended for a single, eligible promoter from the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles to carry out a medical or biomedical research project that is original and daring in nature but that does not find support in traditional funding channels due to a lack of preliminary data, the absence of previous work or an unusual methodology (inter-university projects will not be supported under this AMG-Neuro 2025 call).

  • All approaches will be eligible (biomedical research, clinical research, translational research, epidemiological research, public health, modelling, etc.).
  • The project submitted should lead to:
    • a better understanding of the nervous system and its pathologies,  
    • and/or the development of new therapeutic approaches,
    • and/or improved prevention or detection of nervous system pathologies.
